As a feminist icon, Queen Bey is keeping company with some pretty impressive self-made women. Beyoncé was one of the top ten youngest high earners in 2016, with an estimated net worth of $265 million. Not bad for thirty-five!

So the media found themselves spinning somewhere between frustration, confusion and respect. It wasn’t until November that Beyoncé issued a few words on the subject, telling Essence magazine that she hadn’t wanted a big hullabaloo. ‘It’s been my day so many days already,’ she said, perhaps hinting that Jay-Z had made big romantic gestures on previous occasions, though she wasn’t giving any details. She hadn’t even had an engagement ring. ‘It’s just material,’ she shrugged. ‘It’s just silly to me.’ Her refreshing attitude reaffirmed that any cries of gold-digger – some of which had hung about her after songs such as ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’ – were embarrassingly off the mark. She was at least spotted with a wedding ring – particularly appropriate given the theme of the next hit that was about to land …
